If you’re going on a road trip over the long weekend, you may want to wait to fill up your gas tank.

That’s because prices are expected to rise just in time for Labour Day.

Dan McTeague, a petroleum analyst with gas price monitor GasBuddy, said the cost at the pump could jump by five cents in Metro Vancouver starting on Saturday.

That means it could cost you more than $1.45 per litre to fill up your car.

“I don’t think it will sustain itself, but who knows. With these prices, we might be in luck and see a one penny decrease on Sunday and then those prices will remain until next Thursday,” McTeague said.

Prices are going up due to a number of factors, such as demand for gasoline in the northwest from travellers who wanted to catch the eclipse, as well as Hurricane Harvey, McTeague said.

Anyone heading out of town or preparing for back-to-school may want to avoid areas covered by gas taxes before they fill up.
