Edmonton’s new southside school will honour a fallen Edmonton police officer by using his badge number as part of its phone number.

The last four digits of Constable Daniel Woodall School’s phone number are “2829,” which was the officer’s badge number when he was a member of the Edmonton Police Service.

Woodall was shot on June 8, 2015 in west Edmonton while trying to serve an arrest warrant. The 35-year-old joined the Edmonton force in 2007 after starting his career with the Greater Manchester Police in England.

The Constable Daniel Woodall School in Windermere is opening this September and will accommodate students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Principal Leona Gordey believes the sentiment is a wonderful way to remember the fallen constable, who was involved in the community.

“He was a man who really appreciated and valued community and community contributions,” Gordey said on Friday.

The ‘W’ logo for the school also commemorates Woodall.

“The logo represents the memorial ribbon, which is the light blue, the navy and the red, from the Union Jack flag, and also the darker maroon red for the variation in colour for the (Canadian) maple leaf,” Gordey said.

“We take great pride in our logo because it represents his heritage from Manchester from the United Kingdom and from Canada, which he was very proud of both.”

The team name for the school is also the “Woodall Wings.”

It took several months for the ideas to come to fruition, but Gordey said it was well worth the effort.
