The area in front of Willingdon School, on Terrebonne between Draper and Royal, is a construction zone, and some parents are seeing red. They say that this amount of road work should have been completed before the start of classes.

“Because they know that school starts at the end of August. they should have planned,” said Diane Cadorette, who has a granddaughter at the school. “This is an elementary school and kids should be protected.”

The fear is that the kids aren’t safe especially because a sidewalk right next to the school is closed.

Margaret Jackson is a lunch monitor at the school, and says she was shocked to see the work being done.

“We have 520 kids at this school. Where are the buses supposed to go? How are parents supposed to pick up and drop off their kids?”

The area’s city Coun. Peter McQueen agrees, and says getting the re-pavement done on that stretch, should have been a priority.

“It’s extremely bad co-ordination that they were not able to get this one finished, before school starts,” he said.

But not everyone was upset. Some parents say the work is badly needed, and won’t take long.

One parent even pointed out that they’re actually making the area safer for the kids.

Joe Verdicchio, a parent, doesn’t mind the construction at all.

“What they’re actually doing right here, they’re gonna widen out the curb and make it safer for children who are gonna be crossing. You’re forced to squeeze through the corner, so  you’re not gonna have cars whipping and speeding through the corner.”

But McQueen says the curb extensions might not be built right away.

Global News tried to reach borough Mayor Russell Copeman, and Lionel Perez, executive committee member for infrastructure, but did not hear back.

For now, parents can only hope the work won’t take too long.
