A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after robbing 65 public telephones in the greater Montreal area.

Police in Laval, north of Montreal, say Stephane Suave had been detained since his arrest last February as he was emptying the contents of a pay phone.

Evelyne Boudreau says the arrest came with help from Bell Canada’s security team which caught the thief by installing a computer chip inside various phones.
She says an investigation began in June 2016 following a number of police reports about public phones and telephone booths being broken into.

Boudreau says 37 public phones in Laval were robbed, while Sauve, who was sentenced on Wednesday, was also charged in connection with 28 similar incidents in Montreal.
Police say $6,000 was stolen and damage was estimated at $109,000.
