382 impaired driving charges laid in Saskatchewan during July

While police around Saskatchewan may have been cracking down on work zone speeders during the July traffic safety spotlight, they ended up charging more drivers with impaired driving.

SGI said 382 impaired driving charges were laid during the month, 327 under the Criminal Code.

That is slightly higher than the 376 impaired driving charges laid in June.

The focus of the month was on work zone speeders and police handed out 177 tickets to drivers who were going faster than 60 km/h while passing highway workers or occupied highway equipment.

Another five drivers were cited for speeding in a construction zone while a flag person was present.

SGI said drivers need to respect work zone speed limits and exercise caution.

Fines for speeding in work zones are triple that of a regular speeding ticket.

Also during July, police handed out 5,514 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving, which does not include photo radar, 522 tickets for not using a seatbelt or not having a child properly restrained and 462 distracted driving tickets, 377 of which were for using a cellphone.
