American rapper Joey Bada$$ has cancelled his upcoming Toronto concert after alluding to the fact that he viewed Monday’s solar eclipse without “fancy” eye protection.
“Am I crazy for watching the eclipse today w no glasses?” Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, also known as Joey Bada$$, asked on Twitter on Aug. 21.
“I’ve sungazed before and afterwards saw colors for a whole day. I didn’t die tho.”

The rapper also tweeted this wasn’t the first time the world had seen a solar eclipse and insinuated the threat it posed to eyesight was exaggerated.
“This ain’t the first solar eclipse and I’m pretty sure our ancestors ain’t have no fancy eyewear,” he said. “Also pretty sure they ain’t all go blind.”
He then tweeted Tuesday that “due to unforeseen circumstances” the Toronto concert on his Everybody Tour, as well as shows in Cleveland and Chicago, had been cancelled.
Curiously, the hip hop artist posted a photo of himself on Instagram Tuesday wearing eclipse viewing glasses during the astronomical event.
He posted another photo Thursday afternoon of himself wearing what appeared to be protective eye wear and said his doctor had told him to keep them on in the daytime.
“A lil annoying,” the rapper said. “But they’re pretty fire.”
He also retweeted numerous photos from fans and media outlets insinuating he had damaged his eyes during the eclipse — adding to the speculation.
Even Toronto City Councillor Norm Kelly joined in the social media firestorm, highlighting the times the tweets were posted and advising people to “always listen to the pros.”
Joey Bada$$’ management company did not return requests for comment. The concert, scheduled for Saturday at Echo Beach, has been postponed until Sept. 28.
