When Kelli-Ann Frate went to a Montreal-area hospital to deliver her second child, she couldn’t have known she was about to be part of something pretty unusual.

“Honestly it was not planned. None of this was planned,” she laughed.

The thing is, her baby was due on Aug. 4, but she delivered instead, July 31, just after 10 p.m.

Thirty-five hours later, on Aug. 2, she got a huge surprise when, she heard something familiar coming from a room not far from hers, she says.

“I said to myself, ‘Am I hearing my sister’s voice coming from this room?'” she told Global News.

“So, like I backed up and my sister was there. So I’m like ‘OK, I’m not dreaming.'”

Melissa’s due date was actually on the day Kelli-Anne’s son was born.

“I actually had just made it to her birth,” said Melissa Frate.

“I got there, her water broke, she started pushing and ten minutes later, her son was out.”

And after Melissa gave birth, something else happened: Another sister, Emily Frate, who was also pregnant, went into labour.

Melissa explains that Emily was actually due on Aug. 1.

“I was supposed to come in the next day to watch her give birth but instead I ended up coming in at 4 a.m., and giving birth before her,” she said.

Emily’s daughter was born at 5:54 p.m. — almost nine hours after Melissa’s delivery.

Three sisters within 44 hours,” Melissa laughs. “It’s nice!”

The three all have other children, and are thrilled it turned out this way.

They spend a great deal of time together and the whole experience, has brought them closer.

“It’s nice,” said Kelli-Ann.

“Instead of going to a mother-child group session, we got each other.”

“Sometimes they’re going through something that I’m going through and we just share opinions,” said Emily.

There is just one downside: “None of us can babysit for each other,” Melissa quipped.
