Newcomer George Chahal will fill the Ward 5 council seat in the 2017 election, according to unofficial results released Monday night.
A boundary change had long-time Calgary Councillor Ray Jones running to represent a different ward.
Below is a full list of candidates.
Sarbdeep (Preet) Baidwan
Preet Baidwan is a small businessman and volunteer who works to stop the destruction of public parks in the northeast. If elected to city council, Baidwan wants to reduce the tax burden, make changes to property taxes and increase essential services.
George Chahal
George Chahal is an entrepreneur, running his own business and also serving on several community committees in the city. If elected to city council, he would focus on transit, roads and support for first responders.
Tudor Dinca
Tudor Dinca is an immigrant to Calgary from Romania. If elected as Ward 5 councillor, Dinca would focus on neighbourhood safety, public services and urban planning.
Hirde Jassal
Hirde Jassal is an active volunteer and immigrant to Canada. In his run to become the councillor for Ward 5, he is focusing on youth involvement in the community, the secondary suite debate and infrastructure.
Balraj (Raj) Nijjar
Balraj Nijjar has worked with the City of Calgary for more than seven years and is involved with several non-profit organizations. Nijjar’s priorities as a candidate for city council include improving transportation and infrastructure in his ward, property taxes and removing red tape around city services.
Aryan Sadat
Aryan Sadat is a lawyer living in Calgary. If elected to represent Ward 5, he would focus on community safety and fiscal responsibility.
