The westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Brighton were closed for nearly six hours following an early morning single vehicle crash.
Northumberland OPP say around 6:30 a.m. a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire crashed. Two people were in the vehicle.
Both occupants were transported to hospital by paramedics. The male driver sustained life-threatening injuries and has been subsequently airlifted to a Toronto area trauma centre. The female passenger has minor injuries.
The highway between County Road 30 (Exit 509) in Brighton to Big Apple Drive (Exit 497) in Colborne were closed as police investigated. Detours were in place.
The highway reopened around 12:15 p.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
