A man in his 40s was killed on Wednesday evening after falling from a mountain near Canmore, Alta.

RCMP said the victim was descending the north face of the Middle Sister mountain when he fell a “significant distance.”

A rescue operation was launched by Kananaskis Public Safety at around 7 p.m., but the climber died at the scene.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released by RCMP, was with three other climbers at the time. RCMP said all four were from the Canmore area.

RCMP said they are investigating the death in conjunction with the Calgary Chief Medical Examiner’s office.

“It is unknown at this time what specific factors, if any, contributed to the accident,” RCMP said in a news release. “Investigators do not believe that the death is suspicious in nature.”
