Peel Regional Police say a four-year officer with the service has been charged with fraud with respect to questionable employee benefits claims.
Police said an investigation was launched by the professional standards bureau in March after Sun Life Financial, the benefits provider for the service, forwarded information about claims submitted by the officer.
Officers announced Wednesday evening that Const. Noel Santiago was charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000 in connection with the claims. Police said as per the Ontario Police Services Act, Santiago has been suspended with pay.
Peel Regional Police Staff Sgt. Valerie Graham told Global News she wasn’t able to discuss the specifics of the claims because the matter is now before the court.

“Obviously we take these matters very seriously and we hold our members to a high standard,” Graham said.
Santiago is scheduled to appear in Brampton court on Sept. 11.
