A pedestrian killed after a collision with a semi-truck on Alberta’s Highway 2 is suspected of committing a violent domestic assault in Calgary’s northwest prior to pulling over and walking onto the road.
Airdrie RCMP said a 46-year-old Calgary man was driving north on Highway 2 when he pulled over just past the Highway 72 overpass Thursday morning.
He got out of his car and walked into the driving lane on foot, RCMP said in a release.
Officers said despite the semi driver’s efforts to avoid hitting him, he was struck and killed just before 11 a.m.
“RCMP have learned that deceased was involved in a domestic assault in the city of Calgary earlier the same day,” Airdrie RCMP said in a statement Thursday afternoon.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) believe the man killed in the crash violently attacked his wife in the community of Dalhousie at about 9 a.m.
Police were called to a home in the 4700 block of Dalton Drive N.W. after a neighbour called in.
“Officers arrived to find a woman in her late 30s with life-threatening injuries that are believed to be the result of a violent domestic assault,” CPS said in a statement.
“The woman’s husband had left the scene before officers arrived and police officers immediately flooded the area to try to locate him.”
Police said while they were trying to find him, it’s believed he was killed in the crash near Crossfield.
The woman was taken to hospital. Police said her condition had been upgraded to serious but stable as of 4 p.m.
CPS are continuing to investigate, but are not looking for any other suspects.

Traffic in the area was re-routed earlier Thursday, but had returned to normal as of 4 p.m., RCMP said.
Police are not releasing further information, citing the victim’s privacy.
