Siemens in Tillsonburg has landed a major deal.

The facility has been tapped to manufacture 420 wind turbine blades — its biggest order ever.

The turbines will be shipped to the $850 million K2 Wind Project north of Goderich, which is the province’s largest wind project.

It’s expected to be up and running in 2015 — generating 270 megawatts of energy. That’s enough to power 100,000 homes.

The deal will secure 300 jobs as well as dozens of spinoffs, sustaining production in Tillsonburg for at least the next two years.

As well, once the wind farm begins operating, the project is expected to generate between $5 million and $6 million for the local economy.

That reportedly includes millions paid to local farm families through land lease agreements, and $1,500 to families that live within a kilometre of a turbine.
