A teenager who was found guilty in a deadly crash on Regina’s Ring Road has learned his fate.

On Thursday, the judge sentenced the youth, who can’t be identified because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, to 120 days of open custody supervision, including 80 days in a facility and 40 days in community supervision, followed by a 19-month probation. He must also complete 185 community service hours.

“An open custody sentence is less restrictive in terms of how a young person is confined. He’s allowed out during certain periods of the day for work and employment and so on and so forth but is required to come back at the end of the day and reside in the youth facility,” Fox said.

48-year-old Saeed Ahmad Warraich was driving on the Ring Road in March 2015, when a 16-year-old driver crossed the ditch and hit him head on. Warraich died instantly, leaving behind his wife and toddler twin boys.

In March, the teen was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Warraich’s widow, Sibgha Saeed, was hoping for closure after the sentencing, but said she also doesn’t want her husband to ever be forgotten.

She said her twin boys, now five, ask about their father every day and struggle to understand that he died.

Saeed also said she wanted the youth to finish his studies to become a positive citizen in the community.

Defence lawyer Sharon fox said the youth, who is now 18, is relieved the sentencing is over.

“From my client’s perspective, he’s glad that this is over to a certain degree and extent. There’s lifelong consequences for everyone involved and that’s not lost on him. Unfortunately, this is going to be an event and consequence he’s going to live with the rest of his life,” Fox said.

After the teenager completes his custodial sentence, he will still be banned from driving for two years, 8 months and 15 days.

“Nothing’s going to bring back what Ms. Saeed lost and that’s really what this is about today,” Crown prosecutor Ryan Snyder said. “It’s not the sentence we were asking for, but you do always get a pretty good listen out of Judge Halliday, and that’s her decision and we respect that.”

Fox said the youth is considering an appeal.
