WINNIPEG — Increasing traffic volumes in the Amber Trails neighbourhood have the area’s city councillor asking for a traffic study investigating the road in front of Amber Trails Community School.

More vehicles are using Templeton Avenue now than when the school opened in January, 2015 said Devi Sharma, Old Kildonan city councillor.

“There’s so much development of new residential homes, multi-family, and Templeton leads directly to McPhillips where all the commercial and retail development is,” she said.

Parents of children who attend the school are also noticing the increase in traffic volumes on Templeton and in the surrounding area.

“We just have to make sure we’re extra careful on those higher traffic streets,” said Jacqueline Hammond.

Others believe drivers are going too fast in front of the school.

That’s why Sharma is asking for the city to conduct a traffic study on Templeton Avenue to determine if more traffic control devices are needed.

“Making sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure the safety of students,” said Sharma.

Right now there are two unlit crosswalks and school zone speed limit signs on the street but if this study happens it will determine if more measures need to be taken.

It would measure traffic and pedestrian volumes to find out if the numbers warrant the installation of things like speed bumps, or lit crosswalks.

The proposal for the study will go to city hall on Tuesday.
