WINNIPEG — Two Winnipeg streets could be seeing a change in pace after recommendations are set to come before one of the City of Winnipeg committees.

On Tuesday, the Infrastructure and Public Works Committee will hear recommendations that they go to Manitoba’s Highway Traffic Board to consider changing the speed limit on Waverley Street from 50 km/h to 70 km/h between a point south of the CNR Rivers Subdivision Mainline to Taylor Avenue.

“The engineering of the road allows the speed limit to be increased. There’s going to be very good separation for the sidewalk and active transportation, such as people on bikes,” City Councillor Jeff Browaty said.

Right now, travelling down Waverley Street drivers experience varying speed limits. Many drivers tell Global News the varying speed limits prove to be confusing while on the road and often difficult to adhere to at all times with the fluctuations.

“Uniformity I think is a lot safer. I think that’s a safety issue,” Debbie LeBane said.

As a driver going down Waverley Street often, LeBane said so much fluctuation within a small area of travel poses safety concerns for her and doesn’t allow her to feel confident while on the road.

Councillor Browaty said if any changes are accepted at Tuesday’s meeting, the speed limit changes would not come in until after the construction of the Waverley underpass.

Another recommendation that will be on the table is to increase the speed limit from 50 km/h to 60 km/h on Keewatin Street between Inkster Boulevard to Old Commenwealth Way.
