Alberta’s official Opposition says more must be done to help sexual assault victims leading up to a trial.
The Wildrose party is calling for a 24-hour tele-health link to aid medical staff who are doing sex assault exams.
The party also wants an update on how well police detachments are equipped to handle and store sex assault evidence kits.
It would also like new rules to ensure proper collection of evidence if an unconscious person or someone without the mental capacity to give consent are sexually assaulted.
WATCH: Advocates say Alberta sexual assault victim deserved better – Quinn Ohler reports.
Wildrose Leader Brian Jean says the suggestions follow consultations that included victims of sex assault.
A repeated concern was the discrepancy in resources available between Alberta’s major cities, and rural or remote communities.
“Survivors need to know that we believe them, and they need to have the ability to be as supported as possible from the time of their assault to the time a trial may begin,” Jean said Friday in a news release.
