A London police constable has earned some recognition for his role in scores of water rescues at Grand Bend.
Const. Matt Hopkins became a lifeguard at the age of 16 and has since gone on to help rescue more than 130 people at Grand Bend Beach during his tenure with the London police marine unit.

During a presentation at Thursday’s London Police Services Board meeting, Hopkins was named Water Safety Super Hero of the Year by the Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium.
Paramedic and lifeguard Scott Ruddle presented the award to Hopkins and credited him for his actions both on and off duty — a reference to when Hopkins rescued a young tourist at a resort beach during a trip to Mexico.
