Sgt. John Spaans said RCMP are working closely with the family to try to figure out how the toddler ended up in a pool in the hamlet of Delacour, northeast of Calgary.

“It was a family-sized pool located at a private family dwelling, and the child was a resident of the house.”

“I believe at least one adult was present,” he said. “I don’t know the relationship to the child.”

“Everyone’s hoping for the best outcome.”

EMS said the toddler was rushed to the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary in critical condition.

RCMP said he was later taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where he remains in critical, life-threatening condition.
