A few things to think about:
First, we hear anecdotal stories that they don’t keep score when little kids are playing sports these days. The theory is, they don’t want kids to feel excluded. So, they don’t keep score, or everyone gets an “inclusive medal.” Many have a problem with this.
On the other hand…everything is a competition these days. Award shows abound. There’s the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys, the American Music Awards … the list is endless. On top of these we have competition shows like The Voice, America’s Got Talent, cooking shows.
Issue two is nudity on TV. Everyone I know who watches Game of Thrones, raves about the show and always mentions the violence and the nudity. Which is okay; I don’t really care one way or the other.
What I find funny is when Janet Jackson flashes on TV because of a wardrobe malfunction everyone has kittens! The justification is; “it was on network TV and not cable” – where anything goes. To me TV is TV. It’s all the same. Besides, who doesn’t have cable these days?
Another double standard is bad language. They’re dropping ‘f’ bombs all the time. Everywhere. Cable, CBC…everywhere. However, if I were to start using that sort of language on the radio, it’s likely that our station would be disciplined (loss of revenue for a period of time) and I would likely be fired as well.
Like I say…crazy world.
