City of Hamilton urges waterfall visitors to take precautions

The City of Hamilton is urging safety for those who visit the city’s waterfalls as we head into the first long weekend of spring.

The city has released a video which features a range of tips for visitors, including staying on marked trails and viewing platforms, and obeying posted signs.

There’s also a reminder that many of Hamilton’s waterfalls have extra water flowing through them and that trails are slippery because of recent rainfall.

The safety campaign follows a record 25 rope rescues last year by Hamilton firefighters.

The most common locations were Tew and Webster’s Falls, Albion Falls, Felker’s Falls and the Devil’s Punch Bowl.

City councillors recently voted to study the “negative impacts” of a surge in waterfall visitors on communities such as Greensville and Dundas, following complaints about traffic, illegal parking and trespassing.
