Warmest day of 2017 so far is on the way for central Saskatchewan on Thursday, accelerating flood concerns.
Water Security Agency Warning
Evacuations have taken place as flooding hits parts of eastern Saskatchewan.
About 100 people from the James Smith Cree Nation have been relocated to Melfort, Sask., and other evacuations have taken place in the Erwood area.
The mild weather has the Water Security Agency warning of ice jams creating potential flooding issues with several reports already near Erwood and Battle River.
The agency expects breakup to occur on the North Saskatchewan River this week, which they say could result in ice jamming on the water system and is asking the public to use caution when near river systems.
Saskatoon Forecast
Today
-8 was what it felt like this morning in Saskatoon with wind chill as temperatures fell back to -2 to start the day.
It was a gorgeous morning filled with blue skies and sunshine and a southeasterly wind at sustained speeds around 30 km/h with gusts upwards of 40 km/h helping warm us into double digits by noon.
Similar conditions will remain for the rest of the day as we push up into the low teens for an afternoon high.
Tonight
Clouds will build back in as a warm front presses in tonight, helping keep us fairly mild with an overnight low staying a few degrees above freezing.
Thursday
Thursday will be the warmest day so far this year with a big upper ridge of high pressure building in that’ll boost our afternoon high in the mid-to-high teens.
Strong southerly winds will also help with that warming with gusts upwards of 50 to 60 km/h, especially in the morning as clouds clear out early in the day for some midday sunny breaks before retuning later on.
Friday
We’ll remain warm to end off the work week with a daytime high in the high teens, possibly even pushing into the low 20s, especially south of the city with clouds in and out through the day.
Work Week Outlook
A few systems are expected to track by south of the city, which are likely to bring Saskatoon into some rain on Saturday, switching to a good chance of snow on Sunday as temperatures cool back into mid-single digits.
There is still a lot of discrepancy with the weekend forecast, so we’ll have a better idea as to what exactly will pan out in the days ahead.
