Fraudster ordered to pay money to ripped-off businesses

One of five people Kelowna RCMP called “travelling criminals” has been sentenced after pleading guilty to fraud.

The group, from Montreal, was in Kelowna late last year on two separate visits.

“It is believed that the group fraudulently purchased nearly $20,000 in merchandise from local liquor, clothing, electronics and specialty stores as well as other services such as hotels and rental car agencies,” stated an RCMP news release issued after the five were arrested in November at a local hotel.

Police say they seized a significant amount of suspected stolen property from hotel rooms and a rented vehicle.

Leo Desbiens-Duquette was sentenced to time served since his arrest, just over three months, one year probation and fined $200.

He was also ordered to pay almost $6,000 in restitution to the businesses.

Court proceedings continue against the other accused fraud artists.
