Meet your match

The Ontario SPCA Provincial Education and Animal Centre in Newmarket not only saves the lives of animals but the agency also helps place animals into qualified homes.

“Every animal should have a chance to feel how it feels to be loved and to grow up with a family,” said Jennifer Baker, adoption coordinator and educator at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education and Animal Centre. “Each of them has their own little story. Maybe some of them are not as heart wrenching as others, but you know all are looking for love.”

A potential adopter must fill out a survey about how they want their new pet to fit into their family.

Through Ontario SPCA’s Meet Your Match program, Sara Johnston welcomed a new puppy to her family.

“There’s so many animals that need homes and it didn’t make any sense to me to try and go to a pet store or try and create an animal through a breeder,” said Johnston.

The questionnaire helps determine which animal would best match your expectations regarding experience, lifestyle and home environment.

Based on the answers given on the survey, the respondent will be given a colour-coded guest pass to use as a guide to match themselves with their new pet.

“We’re a training centre but we’re also an adoption centre,” said Baker. “We’re all about the animals and trying to promote every which way that we can provide quality care for the animals and also support.”
