MONTREAL – Sunday’s snowfall is hampering the city of Montreal’s effort to remove all the snow that fell in the historic Dec. 27 storm by the end of the weekend.
The city said it will probably have to suspend that goal so it can tackle the five to 10 centimetres of snow that fell Sunday.
Snow began falling Sunday morning. The precipitation is expected to end overnight, Environment Canada says.
On Sunday morning, city crews spread abrasives on sidewalks and roads.

Once 2.5 centimetres have fallen, the city will begin clearing them, said city spokesperson Philippe Sabourin.
On Dec. 27, a storm dumped 45 centimetres of snow on Montreal, a one-day record.
Some boroughs have been criticized for the slow progress of snow removal.
But with more than 95 per cent of the Dec. 27 snow removed, the city is ready for Monday morning, when many Montrealers will return to work and school after the holidays, Sabourin said.
“We don’t anticipate any traffic problems on Monday – our priority was to make sure the city was open and active” for the end of the holidays, he said.
Sabourin said most streets still clogged with Dec. 27 snow are narrow residential roads that are difficult to clear, in boroughs such as Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Verdun and Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension.
Barring a bigger-than-expected snowfall on Sunday, the city should be able to clear them all on Monday, he said.
