Alberta energy regulator wants feedback on new fracking rules

CALGARY – Alberta’s energy regulator is looking for public input on new rules to regulate the growing use of fracking in the province’s oilpatch.

The Energy Resources Conservation Board says it wants companies to submit development plans for entire regions instead of just one facility at a time.

It says each different resource play could come under slightly different rules depending on the different risks of each.

Board spokesman Bob Curran says a more general approach would allow communities to have a better overall say in how their area is developed.

He says the board is asking for feedback now so it can have regulations in place for when fracking in Alberta begins in earnest.

Members of the public have until March 31 to make their opinions known.
