The science behind safety: new store offers help finding proper sports equipment

CALGARY- A new store is offering some expert advice on the science behind safety-just in time for the holidays.

The Impact Lab is located in the main lodge at Canada Olympic Park, and features interactive displays with information about sports injuries. It was created by WinSport’s president and CEO, who came up with the idea after seeing too many people wearing winter equipment that didn’t fit properly.

“It doesn’t matter if it looks cool, if it doesn’t function correctly,” says Dr. Stephen Norris.

The store’s mandate is to give people the best possible advice in the interest of protection, by drawing on sports research.

“We really want to attend to our mandate around being an institute of sport,” Norris explains.

Mount Royal University sports science professor Sean Maw says new helmets are designed to prevent concussions.

“Some work better than others, some have certain limitations, others have certain strengths,” Maw says. “You need to know what those are to make the best choice for your skill level, your age and the sport you’re in.”

He adds a store like the Impact Lab is long overdue.

“You see a lot of parents who aren’t really sure what they need or why.”

WinSport plans to open two other stores, one for hockey gear and the other for mouth protection.
