Report dangling downtown icicles, Calgary road officials ask

WATCH ABOVE: The deep freeze in Calgary is causing icicles to form on buildings and Plus 15’s downtown. City crews will try to knock them down, but as Gary Bobrovitz reports, they want a heads up from pedestrians – Jan 10, 2017

City officials are urging Calgarians to report any Plus-15 walkways that look like they have icy fangs, so that road crews can remove the icicles before they fall and hurt pedestrians or damage vehicles under them.

“We’re asking the public report them to 311 and our central roads crew will go knock them down,” said Brittany Kustra, a spokesperson for the City of Calgary.

The warning has some Calgarians walking with their eyes to the sky.

“Yeah, you’ve got to be looking up – no phone texting… while the ice is here,” Lesa Freeman said as she was walking near City Hall.

“I’m a little bit scared… they could fall like in Christmas Story and break my glasses, so I don’t wear them when I walk,” Megan McGoey-Smith said as she crossed McLeod Trail at 9 Ave SE.

Many icicles have formed on the underside of the Plus-15 next to Eighth Avenue Place at 525 Eighth Avenue SW. Some appear to be over 60 centimetres long.

There are signs in front of the building warning pedestrians about falling ice.
