Police on Vancouver Island made an arrest after a vehicle was involved in a violent attempted kidnapping last night.

At about 6:30, police received a number of 911 calls in the Gordon Head neighbourhood of Saanich.

Two people were then found suffering from stab wounds.

Police say a male suspect approached a female victim and pulled her into a white U-Haul van.

The screams drew the attention of another female resident.

She confronted the suspect, leading to a physical confrontation.

The woman sustained lacerations that required her to go to hospital, but has now been released.

The incident was seen by witnesses who called 911 and gave police a good description of the vehicle.

The van was eventually found empty behind a school.

The license plate confirmed the identity of the person who rented it, leading to an arrest of the suspect late last night.

He is a 34-year-old Saanich resident.

He remains in custody, and is expected to appear in court today or tomorrow.
