Fire crews remained on scene at the Stony Plain Alliance Church Monday morning to put out hot spots from Sunday’s blaze.

The fire at the church’s family centre broke out shortly before 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Firefighters spent several hours trying to contain the stubborn blaze.

Deputy fire chief Bert Lubbers said the family centre was destroyed in the fire.

“At one point it was hoped that we could save the offices but that did not happen,” he said. “However, crews were successful in saving the church itself which is separated by a parking lot.”

All homes in the area were spared by the fire. Crews were able to bring the blaze under control Sunday night but they will remain on scene throughout the day Monday to make sure it doesn’t spark up again.

“With a wind warning in effect for the town today, crews will continue to dump as much water on the now demolished building to make sure every hop spot is completely put out before the winds pick up,” Lubbers said.

The Stony Plain Alliance Church said Christmas Eve services will go ahead as planned, at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. In the auditorium.

At one point Sunday, upwards of 55 firefighters from the Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County fire departments were working to douse the blaze.

The family centre housed a library, nursery, youth group as well as the church offices.

No one was in the building at the time and no injuries were reported. At this time it’s not known what sparked the fire.
