While it’s true that trends come and go, and style is forever, sometimes you want to spruce up what you’ve got with a little something different and timely. A new set of throw pillows, an area rug or an accent lamp can change the identity of a room without involving a complete overhaul.
To help make your 2017 redecorating projects more streamlined, Pinterest, every amateur decorator’s virtual mood board of unattainability, has analyzed emerging home decor trends based on the pictures that are getting the most pins going into the new year. While a lot of what we saw in 2016 will stick around — indoor greenery and patterned wallpaper, for example — these trends are being updated with new techniques and prints.

Toronto-based interior designer Patti Rosati corroborates some of Pinterest’s findings, like the return of cozy interiors and the rise in popularity of navy blue in lieu of black, especially for kitchens and bedrooms.

“There’s going to be a return to people collecting vintage furniture and creating modern classics, versus the industrial trend we’ve been seeing for the last few years,” she tells Global News. “We’re going into a more refined, casual look that emphasizes comfort and warmth.”
Pinterest refers to this style as “hygge,” a Danish term that roughly translates to “comfort” or “coziness,” and predicts it will come through in accents like reclaimed wood fireplaces, monochromatic accessories, luxurious bedding, and warm, natural materials.

“We’re veering away from shiny, contrived-looking finishes and glam mirrored accents,” Rosati adds. “Now it’s about natural materials with matte finishes.”
On the heels of Pantone’s announcement of the colour of the year, green will undoubtedly make a strong showing in the home decor arena. Though Rosati doesn’t think it’ll be quite the shade of “greenery” they’ve announced.

“We did that 10 years ago and I’m really not into it at all,” she says. “It’s a bright, in-your-face colour, and I think people want something more calm and subdued in their homes right now.”
The one dazzling accent piece you can go for? Something jewel-toned.
“One upholstered piece in a gorgeous jewel tone, like a unique armchair in emerald green velvet, throw cushions or an upholstered headboard looks amazing,” Rosati says. “That’s where you’ll want to put some unexpected colour.”
Other trends Pinterest has isolated include mixing modern and rustic elements for a farmhouse-inspired style, DIY mini makeovers (like making your own nightstand), faux textured wallpaper, copper accent pieces, acrylic decor and in-floor heating.
