WINNIPEG — Winnipeg and southern Manitoba may experience the coldest days of the season this weekend.

On Friday night, temperatures across southern Manitoba will be falling close to -30 C to -34 C. Windchill values will also plummet as far as the mid -40s in Westman. Extreme cold warnings were issued by Environment Canada Friday afternoon warning of these conditions.

Saturday will also be bitterly cold. Winnipeg’s daytime high is expected to be -26 C, which would be colder than any day last season. From December 2015 through February 2016, the coldest day was Jan. 9 where temperatures only got up to -23.2 C.

Warmer temperatures are on the way across the prairies next week, likely arriving in southern Manitoba around the middle of the week.
