Newly released video shows the moment firefighters in China rescued a man threatening to jump from a 30-storey building in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou.

Officials responded to the high-rise on Dec. 10 to find a distraught and hysterical man standing on the outer ledge of the building and hitting himself with an iron bar.

Friends of the man and officials called for him to step back from the building’s edge, but when he did not respond a firefighter crept up on the man to attempt a daring rescue.

The man’s friends acted as a distraction so the firefighter could jump from behind a pillar and grab the man before he could leap.

Video shows the firefighter hanging on to the man as he dangled high above the ground. It appears the man attempts to break free, but other firefighters were able to rush in and help pull the man over the barrier wall to safety.

Officials reported that the man was suffering from relationship issues.
