Canmore RCMP arrest suspect in break and enter, school lockdown

RCMP have arrested a suspect in connection with a break and enter in Canmore, Atla., on Tuesday afternoon that sparked the closure of a nearby school.

RCMP were called to a home on 7 Street between 8 Avenue and 5 Avenue at 12:20 p.m. by a witness who reported hearing a “pop” and then finding a hole in one of the windows of the home.

The witness was able to leave the home safely.

Unsure if the intruder had left the residence, police set up a perimeter around the house.

As a precaution, students at nearby Lawrence Grassi Middle School were kept inside.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service were called to assist. Eventually, investigators determined the residence was empty.

On Wednesday, RCMP announced a suspect had been arrested and is being held “pending further investigation.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Canmore RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

The town of Canmore is located about 100 kilometres west of Calgary.
