SASKATOON – The city of Saskatoon’s curbside recycling program is on-track to start up in the new year.
The first blue bins in Saskatoon Recycles will be rolled out to homes in Silverwood Heights the week of Jan. 2 with collection taking place every second Wednesday starting on Jan. 16.
Bins will then been phased-in to all homes in neighbourhoods currently receiving black garbage cart service.
The cost of the program is $4.66/month which will be added to the municipal utility bills once pickup service has started.
The city expects 14,000 tonnes of residential household waste to be recycled in the first year, doubling what was collected in 2012.
“Together we built this recycling program, and together we must implement it,” said Brenda Wallace, branch manager of environmental services.
“On average about half of what people put into their black garbage carts can actually be recycled.”

An extensive list of what can and cannot be recycled will be included with each blue bin.
“People often think items like Styrofoam or wood can be recycled, but they can’t, so we all need to become familiar with what can and cannot go in the cart,” said Wallace.
“If you don’t see it on the list, it can’t go into the cart.”
Pickup will take place in the same location as the black garbage cart pickup.
The second phase of Saskatoon Recycles takes place in 2014 when it is extended to condos and apartments.
