Stampeders fans flock to Toronto for Grey Cup fun

There are still a couple days to go until the 100th Grey Cup is handed out, but people are already partying in the streets of Toronto.

Many of them are Calgarians, who have flocked to Hogtown to cheer on their Calgary Stampeders, who face the Toronto Argonauts for the CFL title on Sunday.

“We’ve had a 100 per cent good time everywhere we’ve [gone], it’s great,” says Ann Muhlbach, who made the trip with her husband from Calgary. “[Toronto has a] different vibe than Calgary, but it’s still fun.”

The Stampeders presence is being felt on the streets of Toronto, with Calgary’s Grey Cup Committee holding a stampede breakfast on Friday.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“There aren’t pancakes,” joked Marv Jones, who is on the committee. “We realize this is the centre of the universe so we call them ‘western crepes.’ That way it won’t get anybody upset.”

Brad Greenslade, who is also on the committee, calls the event the highlight of the weekend.

“We’re probably going to feed about 3,000 people here. Pancakes, sausage, just some great times.”

Stamps House also expects to welcome thousands of people on Friday and Saturday night at the Toronto Convention Centre.

However, some fans say Toronto isn’t exactly cup crazy.

“There’s not as much spirit in the really big cities as there is in the likes of Regina or Winnipeg or Calgary, where they really get into it,” said Stampeders fan Jim Conroy.

Politicians are also getting in on the fun; Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi will exchange jerseys with Toronto mayor Rob Ford on Saturday, and one of them will have to wear the opposing team’s jersey during council meetings depending on who wins.
