It was a historic day for Les Canadiennes de Montreal on Saturday.
They took to the ice in the first ever women’s professional hockey game to be played at the Bell Centre.
Les Canadiennes took on the Calgary Inferno and came away with a 1-0 victory.
Although the result certainly impacts each team’s respective season, the historic game could mean more for the sport of hockey.
“It’s giving more power to women,” Marie Caloushe, a fan at the game, said. “They work so hard at it so we’re just thankful to see girl power.”
Although the game didn’t match the Montreal Canadiens in terms of spectator numbers, a good number of fans showed up to back their home team.
“It’s the pace, it’s just great hockey, old school hockey,” Bob Abbott, a spectator at the game, said.
Those in attendance have also taken notice of how much hard work goes in to playing professional hockey.
“Women are very good at their sport,” Fannie Beaudoin, a fan at the game, said. “They’re practicing a lot and they put in so much effort.”
Mario Lefort, whose daughter Sarah is a forward with Les Canadiennes, knows firsthand what it takes to be a professional women’s hockey player.
“I know how hard she works and they deserve the support,” Lefort said. “It’s exciting and it’s fun.”
