Saskatchewan’s first blizzard of the season hit the Weyburn and Estevan areas particularly hard Monday and Tuesday. The winter storm covered southeast Saskatchewan as far north as Yorkton. The hardest hit areas reported snowfall as high as 20 to 35 centimetres.
On Tuesday, public works crews and contractors were out early in Weyburn clearing away snow from major roadways.
“They’ve hired extra contractors to go out and help clear the snow,” Mayor Marcel Roy explained.
“This afternoon and this evening they’ll start into clearing the downtown areas. Plus they’ve cleared a lot of the school areas, and are working around those today.”
Once those areas are complete, Roy said crews will move in to the residential areas.
“Patience is the catch-phrase of the day,” Roy said.
“Just be patient our crews are going to be working. They’re going to be working double shifts today so they can clear things off.”
As for residents, digging out of the snow is top of mind.
“We’ll not know where to put it, no, no,” Raymond Pretty said, as he took a break from shoveling his driveway.
“If we keep getting them off and on all winter, if they’re big drops like this.”
Plows, graders, Bobcats, and front-end loaders are working their way through Weyburn. The mayor said crews were ready for the job, but it’s just going to take a few days.

“We knew that this snow was coming, but this is still probably one of the largest snowfalls we’ve had in four to five years,” he explained.
