Protesters rally outside Halifax International Security Forum

HALIFAX – Demonstrators gathered outside a Halifax hotel today to show their disapproval for an international security forum taking place inside.

One of the rally’s organizers says he’s denouncing what he sees as Ottawa’s increasing reliance on the military to resolve international conflicts.

Isaac Saney says many in the group are also marching in solidarity with the Palestinian people in light of the ongoing bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

The protest began just as dignitaries – including federal Defence Minister Peter MacKay – wrapped up a panel discussion on democracy.

MacKay told the panel that democratic countries responding to conflict are “handcuffed” by international rules.

Earlier in the discussion, U.S. Sen. John McCain told the crowd he was “ashamed” as an American over the United States’ lack of action in Syria.
