Garbage collection will stay in the hands of the private sector.

City councillors dealt with a motion Wednesday review the controversial new collection service.

A majority voted to treat the motion simply as information, which means a review or audit will not be done.

When Emterra took over city wide collection last summer, thousands of people complained about late or missed service.

Mayor Sam Katz said complaints have gone down significantly and the new system saves taxpayers $2 million a year. Katz also said more recyclable materials have been kept out of the landfill as a result.

The union representing city workers has long argued the new system isn’t living up to expectations and collection should go back to the public sector.
