Prince Albert police officer has ‘dangerous encounter’ with armed man

Prince Albert police said an officer had a a “dangerous encounter” with an armed man on Wednesday.

At around 2 a.m. CT, a patrol officer observed a 24-year-old man on River Street West who was wanted on numerous warrants.

When the officer attempted to take the man into custody, he began to fight in an attempt to get away.

During the fight with the officer, the man pulled a handgun. Officials said this changed the complexity of the altercation and allowed the man to run away.

The armed man then stole a nearby taxi and led police on a pursuit.

With the help of Prince Albert RCMP, the man was eventually taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

He is facing charges that include assaulting a police officer, robbery with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm , dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.

He is scheduled to make his first Prince Albert provincial court appearance on Thursday.
