A 10-year-old girl is being credited with saving her mother’s life after calling police to the scene of a horrific stabbing in their Calgary Coral Springs home Thursday afternoon.

“She’s my brave girl…my cute girl,” said the girl’s father, Hafeez. “She saved her life.”

The girl and her mother, 41-year-old Anila Malik, were at home Thursday afternoon when Hafeez’s old business partner dropped by unannounced. They hadn’t seen him in eight years.

“My mom was making tea for him,” the 10-year-old said. “We were laughing…then she didn’t feel right, so my mom—secretly under a cloth—dialled my dad’s number so he can come.

“That’s when I heard him push her down (the stairs) and she started screaming, ‘call 9-1-1.’”

The daughter ran upstairs to hide in the bathroom and heard the attacker come up the stairs.

“Then my mom screamed and said something to him and he didn’t like it…went back with the knife,” she said.

“I saw his footsteps leaving under the door, so that’s when I took a run for it and those construction workers were there.”

Workers in the area came to the house to try to help.

“This little girl came out running on the sidewalk, crying and asking us for help,” said a construction worker in the neighbourhood who didn’t want to be identified.

“She said someone was inside the house who wasn’t supposed to be there.”

But when the attacker put his hand in his pocket, the construction workers thought he had a gun.

The daughter said police arrived just in time.

“When police came, he was actually going to finish her…so they came at the perfect time… They stopped that guy from hurting her further.”

Hafeez said his wife’s neck was cut to “stop her from screaming.”

“I know him for a long time, a long time ago,” Hafeez said, adding he was a business partner driving taxis about 10 years ago. “If he has a problem with me, he can deal directly with me. He never fought with me—never, ever in the last 10 years. This came all of a sudden.”
