Regina police have confirmed a one-year-old girl has been found safe after being taken during a car theft in the Cathedral neighbourhood.

At around 11:35 a.m., Regina police said a white 2013 Mitsubishi RVR was stolen from the 3200 block of 13th Avenue.

Police said staff from a business at 3206 13th Avenue, the Groovy Mama baby store, called to report that a woman’s vehicle parked in front of the business had been stolen. The woman’s one-year-old child was inside.

“The one-year-old was in her car seat at the time, in the backseat asleep,” Insp. Trevor Ewart with the Regina police said.

“It was reported to us that the vehicle was running.”

Ewart said the woman had the keys with her and had locked the vehicle.

“I don’t want to blame anyone but in general, we try to discourage that,” Ewart said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“In this instance, it didn’t take very long for this vehicle to be taken. It doesn’t take very long to take a child with you wherever you are. We do have cases documented throughout the year and past years having to deal with these types of situations.”

Approximately one hour later, police said both the infant and the car had been found near Regency Crescent.

Police were in the process of trying to issue an Amber Alert, Ewart said, but officers were available in the area to search immediately.

Ewart said a call to 911 was placed from a payphone at 12:17 p.m. at a strip mall on 3823 Sherwood Drive from an unknown man.

He added that the man reported that the white vehicle with the baby inside was parked by a business on 3rd Avenue north.

Ewart said the man sounded like he was in his early 20s but provided no other information.

The baby was checked over by EMS and deemed fine.

“At the end of the day, we have reunited the one-year-old with her mother and everybody is safe and there’s no harm done to anybody,” Ewart said.
