When Derek Epp was deciding where to play university volleyball this year, family played a major role.

Courted by a number of top schools, including defending national champion Trinity Western University, Epp chose the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, where his older brother Tyler has played for the last four years.

“Playing with my brother was probably one of the biggest factors to stay,” said Derek, a graduate of Marion Graham Collegiate in Saskatoon.

“It’s kinda hard to put into words actually, ’cause growing up he was probably my biggest role model.”

Born five years apart, the age difference prevented the Epp brothers from playing together in high school. Now united as Huskies, it’s the first time they’ve suited up for the same team at the same time.

“Every moment is one to cherish, for sure, just to be together on, off the court. Bus rides, warming up together. It’s very cool and it’s creating some special memories that I’ll have for a long time for sure,” Tyler said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The Epps’ relationship is one of support and healthy sibling rivalry.

“(I’m) always trying to beat him. It’s probably one of the most competitive relationships that I have or that I’ve ever been in but it’s awesome pushing him and he pushes me,” Derek said.

Huskies interim coach Joel Dyck previously coached Derek at the club level, and was a teammate of Tyler’s during the elder Epp’s rookie season with the Huskies.

“They’re both fierce competitors, they’re very character young men and they work hard, and it’s nice that they’re also very good friends, so they get along well,” Dyck said.

Despite Derek’s rookie status, he’s already been given a lot of responsibility with the Dogs, making both brothers key members of the team. Tyler, a middle blocker, is the Huskies captain while Derek, who spent time with the junior national team over the summer, has taken on a critical role as the squad’s top setter.

“I’m super proud of him and if I’m being honest even a little jealous. He’s been able to accomplish so much already and he’s only in his first year, only 18 still. So I guess in a lot of ways, even though he’s my little brother, I look up to him,” Tyler said.

However there are still some lessons big brother can impart, especially when it comes to working off the court.

“Little things like what to do with the game plan and especially getting in the weight room,” explained Derek. “I had a chance to work out with (Tyler) in the summers and stuff, which is awesome because you can tell he’s spent a little bit of time in there and hopefully I’ll get there soon.”

With Tyler set to graduate at the end of the season, the Epps would love nothing more than to win a championship in their only year together.

“That would be absolutely unbelievable but we really try to take it day by day. Just enjoying each opportunity we have to play together and trying to get the best out of ourselves and our team this year,” Tyler said.

For now, they’re just happy to have the chance.
