More than 200 tickets handed out during first day of Edmonton’s seasonal parking ban

Despite a warning by the City of Edmonton about seasonal parking ban, not all Edmontonians are getting the message.

The parking ban started at 7 am Friday. By late Friday afternoon, 247 tickets had been issued.

“Having those streets clear so early on in the plowing process means we will be able to get the job done quickly and efficiently, and hopefully get the ban lifted sooner than we had anticipated,” says Rob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance.

Roads affected by the seasonal parking ban are identified by signs, the majority of which are bus routes.

“All last year we were allowed to park on this side of the street but apparently not this year,” said Aric Keane, who received a parking ticket Friday morning for having his vehicle parked in a seasonal parking ban route.

“Yeah, I didn’t know they were here. I knew I was suppose to move today, but I just got lucky I guess,” commented Tony Dalessio after narrowly escaping getting a ticket.

Motorists can’t park their vehicles on marked routes at any time while the seasonal parking ban is in place, even if the road has already been cleared. The ban is expected to last until Sunday.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the parking ban by checking the City of Edmonton website, the city’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, or by signing up for the email notification system at edmonton.ca/winterroads.
