Chaos erupted at Halifax provincial court Monday after the first appearance of Carvel Clayton, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Shakur Jefferies.

Jefferies was found dead between two apartment buildings on Washmill Lake Drive Saturday night after police responded to several reports of shots being fired in the area.

As Clayton was being led out of the courtroom, mayhem took over as several Jefferies supporters rushed the door, shouting “get him,” among other things, and pushing.

Sheriffs who could be heard yelling “go” to each other rushed Clayton down the stairs as screaming Jefferies supporters inside the courtroom forced their way out the door. A sheriff was knocked over in the commotion.

A police officer and sheriffs rushed to the door of the courtroom to help escort Clayton out as well as attempt to calm the tensions inside.

Sheriffs also forced several protesting people out of the courtroom amid crying, tears and shouts of profanity.

As the rest of those in the courtroom filed out, escorted by several sheriffs and Halifax Regional Police officers, they could be heard shouting at media and making obscene gestures.
