Two students from McGill Univeristy have founded a company to help raise awareness about diabetes and to help those coping with it.

Yumi Box is a whole grain subscription box that delivers preportioned and preseasoned whole grains to your front door.

“All you have to do is add water, add heat and you have healthy carbs delivered to you,” Zoey Li, McGill University dietetic student, said.

Li and one of her friends came up with the idea after Li’s mom, who was diagnosed with diabetes in 2009, struggled with choosing good carbohydrates and having to manage her blood sugar levels.

“So I dedicated my career to figure out how nutritionally we can help people living with diabetes,” Li said.

Every month, Yumi Box uses different flavours and grains.

“It’s really exploring the world of whole grains,” Li said. “Things that you would never actually cook on your own.”

Yumi Box isn’t only for those with diabetes since whole grains can be used to improve your diet.

“Studies show that if we add two servings of whole grains into our diet it can significantly prevent diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases,” Li said.

November is diabetes awareness month.
