Nova Scotians react to President-elect Donald Trump

Donald John Trump has been elected the 45th president of the United States in a stunning election upset over Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Hundreds of Nova Scotians attended viewing parties Tuesday night to watch the results pour in. As they did, they expressed their opinions and concerns on the results.

As a Trump victory became evident, Matt Steele a dual citizen in Canada and the United States living in Halifax told Global he is scared for his friends and family living in America.

“I have family, friends and acquaintances and everybody else I know I am just worried sick about. It’s just sad. I am really disappointed. I am shaking. I am just sick,” said Steele.

Others took to social media to express their opinions.

Chris on Twitter wrote, “I live in Nova Scotia, Canada Economy greatly depends on exports to US, if Trump does “tear up NAFTA” not looking good.”

Scott Neily of Halifax tweeted, “Attention Cape Breton: prepare for a wave of #American immigrants like you would not believe…. ”

Meanwhile some people in the province expressed excitement at a Trump victory.

Nova Scotian Carla Ritchie tweeted, “congrats America so happy that Trump won. From Nova Scotia Canada.”

At an election viewing party in Halifax, the U.S. Consul General Steven Giegerich had some reassuring words for Canadians.

“The Canadian relationship with the United States is so extensive and so positive and so strong on so many levels across so many spheres that will definitely endure no matter the results of this election.”
