OKANAGAN FALLS, B.C. – A southbound transport failed to negotiate a tight curve on Highway 97 at Waterman Hill Monday night and crashed across northbound lanes, bursting into flames.
A passer-by heard explosions as the fire began to consume the semi and trailer.
“The trailer at the back end looked like it was peeled open by a can opener,” Denise Hall, a passenger in another semi that came on the scene shortly after the accident, said about the crash scene.
Hall said as fuel spilled out of the transport’s tank, a small fire on the trailer spread quickly to the entire vehicle.
While a distraught woman was seen by Hall watching the transport burn, it is unknown how she was connected to the accident scene.
Highway 97 was shut down around 7:30 p.m. and is expected to re-open at midnight.
RCMP are re-routing traffic at the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 3A and at Okanagan Falls.
A detour on the east side of Skaha Lake is open, connecting Okanagan Falls with Penticton.
