The U.S. presidential election is just a day away, and regardless of whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton wins, many agree Canada will be impacted in many ways.

“More Canadians should probably be interested in our own politics, but the American election affects everybody,” said David Beitelman, a doctoral fellow at the Centre for the study of Security and Development.

He said Monday that because trading and the energy sector (and related policies) are so connected between both countries, what happens south of the border will impact Canada.

“I think that the kind of changes that Canadians can expect to feel would be nationwide, and it would be more to industry than it would be to territory,” said Beitelman.

Hal Richman, a dual Canadian-American citizen, already voted in the election.

Despite having lived in Canada for more than two decades, he said it’s important to vote in the U.S. election.

Richman said his choice is partly based on the fact his distant relatives were victims of the Holocaust.

“If people get into power who foment hatred and divisiveness, it creates an infection of mind that can easily travel,” he said.
